I have been unemployed for some time now and recently got to the point where my state's unemployment checks just don't cover it all. So over the past month or so I have been seeking online money-making techniques to help out a little bit. I will probably do a few posts on this, but what is below are sites I trust, use, and actually pay and my reviews of these sites.

Survey Spot - This is my favorite site out of all of them. I have made around $60 in less than 3 weeks. They pay via PayPal practically instantly. They have many surveys each day, but only send around 2 e-mails/day. Their point system is 100 points = $1.00. Most surveys are 50 points, but they have surveys up to 500 points about once a week. I qualify for most surveys and I hit this site everyday and keep hitting the "Take Another Survey" button until I run out. They do not have a referral program.

Lightspeed Panel - Another good panel that pays via PayPal. I qualify for around 75% of the surveys that pay generally 75-150 points each. 1100 points gets you $10 via PayPal. This is also a survey site that pays moderately. I have cashed out $20 so far and am quickly approaching another $10 to make it $30 total over the past few weeks. It does take a few days (nearly a week) for the funds to reach your PayPal account, though. I have taken a survey that offered to send me a brand new cereal to try out, and I am looking forward to that. They will send me a full box of cereal and I will be paid extra to try it out for a week.

You Data - This site is ungodly easy to make money. You can easily make $1/minute. The only drawback is that you likely will not have much more than $1/day that you can click on. All you do is click on ads that are geared toward you based on your profile. They have a program you can download or you can just do this all on the site itself. They pay via PayPal every Friday.

Google AdSense - If you have a product to offer and/or get lots of views on your website, blog, or YouTube video, you can make money from Google ads. Look off to your right on this blog and you'll see some ads. Almost nobody clicks the ads, but Google pays you just for impressions. I also have a "How To" video on YouTube that has 24,000 views so far. You can see it here. It's not all that original, but enough people have viewed it where Google contacted me asking me to allow ads to make some money from it. If you have a unique ability you can make a "How To" video and perhaps make money from that. You can even learn something from YouTube and create an equally good video and make money from that. The only drawback is that you have to rake in $100 before they payout.

I have tons of other sites I use to make money and will likely write about them soon. For now, this should be a good start. Please feel free to comment and ask questions, I'll be glad to answer any.

Bob Burns' Halloween Special

BluRay on the new Wii???

IGN reports the rumor (video below) of the Wii2 possibly coming out next year with BluRay capability. My first thought was, "Awesome!" but that was sort of downplayed by, "What's the fucking point?" I do have a Wii and I also have a PS3 (which has BluRay). If it were XBox and Microsoft were to admit defeat from siding with HD-DVD (which I did in the beginning as well) and made their next model BluRay ready, that would be news. The problem with this is that the Wii just is not that powerful and the games do not require the storage of a BluRay. I've played Twilight Princess and it is plenty long a game. I really do not see any game developers utilizing the BluRay for Wii2 because it is just not necessary. The only benefit will be the ability to play movies, which is about fucking time, Nintendo.

About the US Blasphemy Laws

The Obama administration has endorsed blasphemy laws. Yeah, this sucks, but I am not worried. This really cannot happen here due to our Constitution as Pat Condell says. But some still have fears that a blasphemy law may be put in place.

My question, if by some odd circumstance it does happen is: Will fundies quit calling atheism a religion so they can still continue to attempt to bash atheism legally?

Queen Of The Orcs Free eBook/Review

I've wanted to talk about this book series for a while. Before I do I want to point out that the first book in the series, Queen of the Orcs: King's Property, is legitimately free on Barnes & Noble's eReader, which can be read on many devices including your computer, and on Amazon's Kindle. I did see it was available for Sony's reader and for viewing on your computer, but didn't feel like looking it up.

For a long time Dune was my favorite book of fiction. When I got Kindle on my iPod Touch I went apeshit downloading practically every modern freebie I came across. A few months ago I grabbed the first in the Queen of the Orcs trilogy. My Kindle library is almost entirely freebies, but I loved Queen of the Orcs so much I immediately bought the rest of the trilogy before I finished the first book and hope I can urge all three readers to do the same and see why Dune is no longer my favorite work of fiction.

Now, finally, the review

King's Property by Morgan Howell (real name Will Hubbell) begins with a girl, Dar, being taken from her family (donated by her family, if I recall correctly) to be a slave for the king's army. She is branded on her forehead so that if she escapes villagers will immediately kill her for a reward. The king's army utilizes regiments of orcs to take care of the human's dirty work, but the orcs have a strict set of customs. The custom that required Dar's enslavement is that the orcs only eat when a female serves their food.

At first Dar is terrified of the orcs. She then has to serve them and say a phrase to each orc as she serves them in their own language. The other female slaves have no interest in learning what they are saying to the orcs or reasons for their customs, but Dar does. Eventually she becomes comfortable enough to start to learn their language.

The men soldiers all want to fuck Dar (as they do all new slaves), but she is under the "protection" of Murdant Kol. Murdant Kol likes the chase of difficult women, which Dar is, and he makes her "his" woman for her "protection." His plans for her do not go very well and she is ostracized by both the female slaves she works with and the soldiers and she then lives under the protection of an orc, Kovok-Mah.

Kovok-Mah, who is the leader of this orc regiment and is also fairly fluent in English, has Dar sleep in his tent and the other orcs, especially his cousin, Zna-Yat, start questioning his sanity and ability to further lead the orc regiment. The orcs do not particularly like humans, but they endure battle for the humans only because their queen demands it. They feel that humans are smelly (they have a keen sense of smell) and are cruel for they enjoy senseless war a bit too much.

Dar begins to have visions of the future that she cannot make sense of, but they eventually happen and this is very important to the rest of the series.

I have probably said too much, but there is so much more to the story so I don't feel awful for a few spoilers. And I must admit, I had a hard time getting into the book at first. I was certainly interested, but I had another book I was more anxious to get into that I actually paid for three or four chapters in. Even one other reviewer on Amazon said they had a difficult time getting into it. However, I do guarantee that once you get past the first few chapters, it will be very difficult to forget and set aside.

This is now my favorite series in fiction. Being obsessed as I am about this I looked for more by Morgan Howell and found A Woman Worth Ten Copper and it is equally as good and I await the second book coming October 27th. After finishing that book I quit reading. His books are very emotionally draining, but in a good way, and I still do not feel like reading anything else until the next book comes out. After that, I may actually go and re-read the Queen of the Orcs trilogy. If Queen of the Orcs actually was made as a movie series and done as competently as Lord of the Rings, Star Wars would probably be dethroned as my favorite piece of fiction media.

Dolphins Fucking With Jellyfish

Matthew Cobb posted on WEIT this video which he is going to use at a lecture tomorrow. The two animals I enjoy most are cats and dolphins. It probably has something to do with the fact that they are intelligent enough to the point that they enjoy fucking with other animals and this is no exception.

When I was a child and a teen I enjoyed watching my cats catching another animal and intentionally keeping it alive, be it a mouse, rabbit, or bird (yes, my cats would catch them right out of the sky), and from that moment until its eventual death it was my cats' play toy. I no longer have cats for I have no idea how to take care of a cat in a city environment. So now I just hit the Minnesota Zoo and watch the dolphins and they are a lot of fun. The last time I went one of the dolphins was playing with a trainer and whipped a ball at her fucking head! It was awesome.

Goddamn You, Jerry Coyne

Jerry Coyne is at the Atheist Alliance International meeting and has his report here. It sounds interesting. I have the AAI 2007 DVDs, which are quite good, but I have a feeling this year will be even better.

So why am I cursing a man who wrote one of the best popular science books on evolution (I'm only about halfway through Dawkins' TGSOE, but I still like Coyne's better)? Because of this part:

I attended a talk (and had breakfast with) William Dav is, better known as “The Cigarette Smoking Man” of X-Files fame. Davis’s nominal topic was a response to Dawkins, who has criticized The X-Files for being inimical to reason (the supernatural explanation always won). Davis’s response basically boiled down to “Well, we all knew it was fiction,” which I think is inadequate. Davis also gave a bit of biography (I learned this morning that his X-Files cigarettes were herbal, and he had somebody else light them), and threw out a few bizarre statements, to wit: it might have been better not to fight against Hitler in WWII, and that perhaps democracy isn’t the best political system for the US (he feels that it’s inefficient at confronting our enormous global challenges).

I was delighted to find out William B. Davis is an atheist and skeptic (as is David Duchovny, well, maybe not atheist, but I suspect so). However, Coyne says in response to Davis defending The X-Files that "the supernatural explanation always won." No. It. Fucking. Didn't. Jerry, if by some odd circumstance you read this, you're a fucking stud, but this remark is horseshit. It is apparent you have not watched much of The X-Files. In the majority of the "creature of the week" episodes (the non-plot related, alien conspiracy episodes, which were about a quarter or less of the seasons' episodes) there was some purely natural explanation for the seemingly supernatural event. In Unweaving The Rainbow, Richard Dawkins says:

The cult of The X-Files has been defended as harmless because it is, after all, only fiction. On the face of it, that is a fair defence. But regularly recurring fiction -- soap operas, cop series and the like -- are legitimately criticized if, week after week, they systematically present a one-sided view of the world. The X-Files is a television series in which, every week, two FBI agents face a mystery. One of the two, Scully, favours a rational, scientific explanation; the other agent, Mulder, goes for an explanation which either is supernatural or, at very least, glorifies the inexplicable. The problem with The X-Files is that routinely, relentlessly, the supernatural explanation, or at least the Mulder end of the spectrum, usually turns out to be the answer. I'm told that, in recent episodes, even the sceptical agent Scully is starting to have her confidence shaken, and no wonder.

But isn't it just harmless fiction, then? No, I think the defence rings hollow. Imagine a television series in which two police officers solve a crime each week. Every week there is one black suspect and one white suspect. One of the two detectives is always biased towards the black suspect, the other biased towards the whit. And week after week, the black suspect turns out to have done it. So, what's wrong with that? After all, it's only fiction! Shocking as it is, I believe the analogy to be completely fair one. I am not saying that the supernaturalist propaganda is as dangerous or unpleasant as racist propaganda. But The X-Files systematically purveys an anti-rational view of the world which, by virtue of its recurrent persistence, is insidious.

I can only think of one "creature of the week" episode off the top of my head that is supernatural in nature, and that was the Bruce Campbell episode (s06e07, Terms Of Endearment) where The Chin plays a demon knocking up human chicks. There is a boy that has a psychic connection with the aliens, but I'm not going to quite call this supernatural because the aliens communicate telepathically, as do some ants on Earth, and this boy does have a connection with aliens.

Coyne also does not believe that the show being a work of fiction is adequate. I think this is a valid concern, but superficially, I think it is an adequate explanation. All viewers should know that it is fiction, but that probably is not the case all the time. So I do understand the concern over the "message." I have no doubt that the show fueled conspiracy theories. I know Alex Jones (famous conspiracy theorist) interviewed Dean Haglund (Langly from The Lone Gunman) about the Lone Gunman (X-Files spinoff) episode where the World Trade Center was about to be hit by a passenger plane aired months before 9/11. I also talked to Jordan Maxwell (another conspiracy theorist) about that episode a few years back. So there are valid concerns about The X-Files within the skeptical community, but the supernatural aspects need to stop.

As for the talk, which I have not seen yet and Coyne only talked of a couple points, William B. Davis was generally only in the alien conspiracy plot episodes. I don't know if he's seen the "creature of the week" episodes where he was not involved, but if he had, he would have had a better case to defend the show.

I am really sick of skeptics shitting on The X-Files. Not all skeptics do, in fact a few skeptics actually have no problem with the show or even promote it. Those are the skeptics that have actually watched the show, for example, this article on Skeptic Tank. Why not piss on shows such as Supernatural? I actually quite like Supernatural because it does what The X-Files did not. That's right, the mysterious entities are actually supernatural. There is even a great episode making fun of Ghost Hunters. Speaking of which, why aren't skeptics going after Ghostbusters? It has been out 25 years.

I woke up this morning and turned on UFO Hunters (I love me some kooks) on The History channel to have on in the background as I did some way fucking overdue homework. I think it would be more prudent for skeptics to go after these type of shows (and many do) on channels that purport to be of some credibility than to dwell on a long dead fiction show. Most importantly, if you are going to be a skeptic, examine what you are criticizing before you shit on it. I have plenty of kneejerk reactions, myself, that make me a lesser skeptic than I could be, and the wonder of the internet is that someone out there with more knowledge than you on the topic will point that out. That is exactly what I am doing and I am confident I know plenty more about The X-Files than Jerry Coyne and I am calling him out for being too ill-informed about the show to make the statements he did.

The simple answer is I don't fucking know. I know jack-shit about it and could not possibly care less about it because it does not apply to me at this moment in time. I have been paying health insurance for about 10 years and haven't even fucking used it. Yeah, I've been to the doc a few times over these 10 years, but my insurance has never covered those once or twice a year visits. They make you wait until you spend $500+ before they will put any money into it. Yeah, fuck them!

What is getting my goat, yeah, the one I sacrificed last night, is a small group of assholes that are actually wasting their time lying about what the proposed health care system will entail. Death camps? Are you fucking kidding me? You are fucking liars. In fact, I will go all out and say for 100% fact that anyone who says this is a fucking liar. Go ahead and sue me for libel. I fucking dare you. Post here and I will call you a liar by your full name to make it easier for you.

Equally as disturbing is hearing how the Democrats may not reach their 60 votes to kill a filibuster. This is not disturbing because of the death of a Democratic Senator, it is fucking disturbing because of the us-vs-them attitude in our political system and our society. I am angered at this attitude to the point where I would maybe even give into the idea of censorship towards people with a political agenda of this sort.

District 9 Afterthoughts

I saw District 9 and quite enjoyed it. I have no intentions on talking much about the movie, but I do have some booze in me, so let's see how far I go.

District 9 starts off very documentary-like. I actually stays like this for about 15-20 minutes as it introduces us to the only human (Wikus) we will give a fuck about. He is a pencil-neck little fucking dweeb put in charge of a mission to evict these aliens from their current residences. These aliens have been in South Africa for 20 years now, nobody really wants them around, and it is apparent they have no way to fix their mothership to return home so they are stuck here. The plan is to move them 240 kilometers from the city they currently reside.

The aliens are treated as less than 2nd class citizens and the plan is to move them to a concentration camp where no human will have to see them. Wikus, along with a few military personnel as backup, shows up to their slum to personally notify each of them that they are evicted. This is where it gets rather fun. It turns out, these aliens are a little bit unruly. Not gangster unruly, but have little respect for authority and fuck around quite a bit.

It appears that the mothership was transporting a million individuals (which has grown to 1.8 million in the last 20 years) and, although more advanced than humans, these are just regular joes of the aliens. None of them, but a couple, can actually build any technology. Just think... If you were to be on a space cruiser and accidentally land on another planet and all the scientists died on the way, would you be able to build a shuttle to get yourself home or build a gun to defend yourself? It seems much like that and that is highly commendable to make the aliens very human in that regard, they are not all specialists in technology.

Surprisingly, I have the willpower to quit there. That is really all you need to know of the movie. This movie should be seen without knowing jack-shit other than that.

What I love about this is its display of human nature. Humans love to subjugate others. Even the subjugated classes enjoy subjugating the aliens. It is almost as if they are keeping them around for the sole purpose of subjugating them. The humans ensure they do not get away so they can have the joy of killing them like bugs.

Aside from the social commentary, the movie can be quite funny at times. I enjoyed how the aliens all look different and have their own personalities. They even wear human clothes and begin to talk like humans with regard to profanity. I read on AICN that the movie gets rather gory. This is not true (at least to my standards of "gory"), but there is quite a bit of blood being thrown everywhere in some scenes.

Overall, the most effective parts of the movie are when you see the military folks pull out their pistol and just shoot an alien in the head point-blank for little-to-no reason. There is much parallel to the genocide that goes on in the world.

Last thoughts: I did see his short film "Alive in Joburg" and really liked it. It is on YouTube, so watch it and that is a decent sample of the first half-hour or so of what this movie is. I saw this when he was going to be the director of the Halo movie that was slated for 2007, but fell through. I do hope that he does get to do Halo. His screen test of Halo was pretty decent, especially the first couple minutes. I really liked how he nailed the needler gun. I hope District 9 is a huge success and he can finally do Halo, then move on to whatever he wants to do.

G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra Afterthoughts

Goddamn, I want to see this movie again. I see a lot of movies opening day (generally 20+ a year), or the morning after, and wish I would hop on here and comment more on each of them, but I must for this movie. I went into this movie expecting it to be fucking retarded, but a shitload of fun like Transformers (which I also love, but recognize it is absolutely one of the dumbest movies ever made). And I only expected it to be a shitload of fun due to reviews on AICN. I didn't find anything cool about the trailers and had no intention on seeing the movie. But holy fuck! Yes, it was a little stupid, but not bad at all and certainly not dopey like Transformers.

The acting was not very good, but it has it where it counts, which is the action and tech. Near the beginning we are treated to the Cobra jet and it looks incredibly similar to what I recall the toy Cobra jet, though a quick search leaves me thinking perhaps I am recalling shit that never happened. The training sequences were very good and sometimes funny without being Transformers retarded. Snake Eyes, alone, is a good reason to watch this movie.

Hmm... I may as well get into the cast since I mentioned Snake Eyes. A thread on IMDB says it best: "Only good actor in GI Joe and he didn't even have to say a word." I love me some Ray-Fucking-Park. He blew us all away in The Phantom Menace and rendered his scenes in that movie the only ones worth revisiting. I shit myself when I saw Fanboys for the first time and he was one of the guards at Skywalker ranch from THX 1138. Ray Park should kick ass in every movie that comes out in the future. Kevin Smith always says he'd cast Ben Affleck as the shark in Jaws, I say fuck that! Cast Ray Park as the shark in Jaws and you'll have the most frightening Jaws movie ever made.

The only other person I was looking forward to in this movie was Rachel Nichols as Scarlett. I loved her in the last season of Alias, but she was not very good here. Sometimes she was fine/good, but most of the time after the first half hour of the movie, she was not either fine or good. She had a relationship with Marlon Wayans' Ripcord that reminded me of Han & Leia's relationship in The Empire Strikes Back. Hate, hate, hate, oh yeah, I just fell in love with you 2 seconds ago, a second after I was still hating you.

Now for Marlon Wayans. He actually wasn't bad. I was expecting him to be annoying and retarded comic relief. He is sometimes comic relief, but the jokes are not too retarded (e.g. Transformers' "were you masturbating?") and sometimes fit really well. In fact, I would actually say he was the 2nd best actor in the movie, that is, agreeing with the Ray Park IMDB comment. He was very consistent, unlike Rachel Nichols.

Dennis Quaid played General Hawk. Again, the acting was not that great, but I always did like the idea of him in this role. Even though his acting was only passable, he has the look I would imagine for the fine General.

Mr. Eko, from Lost, plays Heavy Duty. I fucking loved this guy in Lost, but what the fuck happened? The first half of the movie, especially when we are introduced to this elite squad, he's just fucking nearly Transformers-level retarded. Thankfully the last half he is actually quite good.

Sienna Miller is the Baroness. I actually cannot say her acting is bad (she has done some really great roles in the past), and objectively, she probably is the best of all the cast, but I do not like the way she looks in this movie. It looks and feels to forced to make her hot and badass at the same time, so fuck her character.

The guy that played The Mummy, though I recognized him from 24 initially, was pretty decent in this when he wasn't fucking whistling.

And the last person I am going to talk about on this already too long list is Channing Tatum as Duke. I must admit some previous baggage about this guy. I. Do. Not. Fucking. Like. This. Guy. Why? One may ask. It is all completely due only to the movie trailer for the movie Fighting. That is it. That movie trailer only made me instantly hate this guy. I no longer like his voice or the way he looks. I almost feel bad for saying it because he is probably a really nice guy and possibly really good actor (he did win awards for an independent film for acting). I really had a hard time watching him in this movie. Especially right away. It was not so bad later on, and I hope this trend continues. I hope that when it comes out on BluRay/DVD that I will watch it many times and just accept him and like him as Duke and can erase all my thoughts of that Fighting trailer.

Just some final comments about the movie itself. There are a few little twists in the storyline that are not bad (nor great) regarding origins and futures. I suspect many people will not know who is actually the Cobra Commander until near the end, and I admit being a bit confused at times, but my first suspicions were correct. My last comment: I really fucking hate the Cobra Commander helmet!

Upcoming DUNE Movie!

I was first introduced to Dune when I introduced a co-worker to Everclear back in late 2001. He obviously knew Everclear would do him in and I would be up all night so he popped in the Dune mini-series to keep me entertained. I absolutely loved it. I recognized it was full of obvious problems, but the story-line was incredible.

I bought the DVD of the mini-series and it remains one of my most watched titles. I have been considering purchasing the book for some time, but I got Kindle for the iPhone/iPod Touch. I got Dune and the book is fucking awesome. I love it!

Before I continue, yes, I've seen the three hour David Lynch version, and I don't like it much at all.

That out of the way, we have another version of Dune coming up and director, Peter Berg (who, I believe was the first guy to fuck Sydney Bristow on Alias after the death of her fiance) has said what he would like to do with Dune. He also directed Hancock, which I did not like that much. In fact, I don't like much of what he has directed except The Rundown. Regardless, I am pretty excited. I've seen him on the first season of Dinner For Five and he seems to have a nice understanding.

What he says he wants to with Dune makes sense:

"[The book] was much more muscular and adventurous, more violent and possibly even a little bit more fun," Berg said. "I think those are all elements of my experience of the book that can be brought in without offending the die-hard fans of the Bene Gesserit and Kwisatz Haderach. There's a more dynamic film to be made."

I just hope he can make it 5-7 hours long, but that, obviously won't happen. I really loved Saskia Reeves as Lady Jessica to the point I can't watch the Children of Dune mini-series because she is not in it. how am I going to cope without her in this, I don't know.

I hope for the best and have a feeling I will just shuffle between Peter Berg's version and the mini-series.

Play .AVI Files On PS3

Here's my first video tutorial (which I believe I said would be for the iPhone/iPod Touch, but fuck it) on how to play video files on PS3. I have not tried all types of movie files, but I presume that any M-PEG format will work so .MP4, .AVI, etc.

I used a file I ripped myself, but obviously if you obtained a file via other means it will work the same way. Just make sure you know where the movie is on whatever device you choose to use, whether a flash drive, external hard drive, etc.

Now he claims he has "not 'returned,'" yet he is ranting about the Thunderf00t and Ray Comfort debate. A nice majority of homes have a computer of some sort, but only a certain minority are saying to everyone they know, "Own a computer like mine." These people are Mac users. Guess what, this is almost no different from, "Join a faith like mine." Sure, product recommendation can be a good thing, but when you are telling someone driving a 1980 Ford Pinto that they should "invest" in a BMW (unrealistic comparison of PC vs. Mac), you are an arrogant, materialistic fuck. It seemed nonsensical to me. I then asked, "Well, what can I do with it?" He told me I can do this cool scroll thingy for my programs. Well what fucking good is that when there is jack shit for programs? Then everyday after work where would I find him? In my room, on my Windows machine.

Now why would a devout Mac user spend all his time on a Windows machine? That is because he can actually do shit on it. Seriously, have you fuckers even got Starcraft on that thing yet? Yeah, okay, well at least you have that... after waiting a fucking year for it after PC(and Blizzard actually likes Apple).

Granted, software for the Mac is starting to improve, but this machine is still right next to useless for me and millions of other people, so until Apple becomes more affordable and versatile, put your smug fucking, apple glowey logo panel loving asses in your 100% leather executive office chairs in front of your white (or faggoty-ass neon) computer and be as useless as your computer and shut the fuck up!

Predators (Predator 3) New Director

Earlier today AICN reported on the new director for Predators, the third Predator movie (those AvP movies don't count, fuck them right in the ass). That director being Neil Marshall, who did Dog Soldiers, The Descent, and Doomsday. I love each of those movie in different ways.

I was then disappointed a few hours later to see Harry practically debunk what I had read earlier. Harry let everyone know that, yes, Neil Marshall was in the running, but the running was 7 directors. The others were not specified, and yes, I am curious who they are. I loved The Descent. Once I first saw Neil Marshall as a potential director for Predators, it seemed perfect.

I do not have any idea who any of the other directors may be, but I really hope Neil Marshall gets it. If not, Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes, Mirrors), whom may or may not be in the running, but I am guessing he is.

I have quite a bit of faith in the Robert Rodriguez script and I highly anticipate it. Any thoughts?

I don't know what the fucking deal is here, but it appears to be Madonna finishing up a song of hers and breaks out into A New Level by Pantera. Supposedly a tribute to Dimebag Darrell.

I even checked up on this. I originally could not tell if that was really Madonna due to shitty quality, but the lyrics at the end of her song made it easy to find that it was actually her and the song is called Hung Up.

A little more searching and it turns out, not only am I a year behind the times, her guitar teacher was a guy that toured with Prong. So my guess, since the intro riff of A New Level is ungodly fucking easy, is that this was one of the earlier riffs he taught her and she liked it.

Regardless what happened or the reasoning, this is pretty fucking awesome. I don't know if Madonna is a Pantera fan, but I am guessing not necessarily. I've never been a Madonna fan, or a pop fan for that matter, but I've also never hated her (well, I hate that Kabbalah horseshit). With this I have an even greater respect for her, being one of the biggest pop stars in the world, acknowledging one of the better guitarists of human history to a live audience.

Update... here it is!

I just happened to remember to turn on G4TV when I got home today knowing the E3 Conference is going on. There were a bunch of guys dressed up in Jedi robes holding lightsabers. Not even a minute after turning on my TV they showed the world premiere cinematic from the upcoming MMO The Old Republic. Holy shit was it fucking beautiful and full of ass kicking.

You see a ship flying toward Coruscant then cut to the Jedi Temple. Then an individual in a cloak and a Twilek are entering the temple. They look up and nod to a bounty hunter, who is haning out a couple floors up outside. The bounty hunter then flies up (like Boba Fett) several floors and sneaks inside the temple.

The two individuals walk into the temple and Jedi approach them. Cut to the bounty hunter that takes out a couple Jedi and looks at a holocron of the ship we saw flying toward Coruscant. Back to the main hall of Jedi, behind the two individuals that ship is flying a crash course into the Jedi Temple. The ship crashes into the main hall in a similar fashion to Starkiller taking down a Star Destroyer in The Force Unleashed. It stops right behind the cloaked individual and a wide door opens. A red lightsaber ignites. Beat. About twenty more lightsabers ignite. That was fucking awesome!!!

Then dozens of Jedi and Sith fucking go at it. The first cloaked individual was, of course, a Sith and he faces off against who appears to be the head Jedi. The action and saber battles are amazing. The entire clip looks fucking great. The clip ends with the head Sith & Jedi in a jump toward each other and land in front of each other, someone got stabbed. Then cut to the ground, a lightsaber drops. It is disengaged with smoke coming out of the hilt and a nice green tint to let you know who was stabbed.

Keep checking G4's The Old Republic site. The trailer should show up fairly soon.

The NMPA (National Music Publishers Association) and the MPA (Music Publishers' Association) have been a pain in my ass since I began playing guitar in March 1996. As a beginning guitarist I found the best way to learn how to play guitar and develop your own style is to learn how to play songs you enjoy and not play songs a guitar teacher thinks is the appropriate for beginners.

An old guitarist of mine used to say, "you need to learn to crawl before you can fly." What he meant by this is that I need to learn simpler music before I can move on to more complex music. This is not completely true. Any ambitious beginner should be able to grasp moderately simple riffs like some older Metallica songs within a short period of time. I did, and many old Metallica riffs are rather challenging for a beginner, but when you keep trying you get the riff and you become a better musician along the way.

Guitar tablature (tab) is incredibly easy to read. In late 1995 I was at a classmate's house and he had an electric bass he was borrowing. I was playing around with it not having a clue what I was doing. He then showed me a tab of a Korn song he was learning and taught me how to read it in about a minute. I was off and running. In March of 1996 I bought my first electric guitar at a pawn shop. That same classmate was printing out tablature from the On-Line Guitar Archive (OLGA) for me left and right. He listened to a lot of Alternative music which I was never into, but he printed out tabs for those songs as well and I played them anyway. Tab was instrumental (pun, oddly, not intended) in my instruction as a musician. Learning from professional musicians taught me song structure and riff structure. I also started noticing trends that led me to begin to understand music theory. I later bought The Guitar Grimoire (the black one, I think it was scales & modes) and everything I have learned from playing other artists' music clicked. Music Theory clicked. After High School I went on to college as a psychology major, but I did take a year of Music Theory which strengthened my knowledge even further.

By this time I was hardly playing other artists' music as I was writing my own. 1999 was a good year for me musically. I wrote many songs, two of which, I think, are my best songs to this day. Even though I was mostly writing, on occasion I would hear a riff I wanted to know or someone would want to jam to a certain song. This is where a quick internet search for tab was useful. Also by this time a new program has come out to make creating tablature easier called Power Tab. I do not think it was too widely used when it first came out, but I used it to tab out my own songs and it printed nicely.

I think 2000 was the year that changed everything and really set fire under the asses of the shareholders of above mentioned greedy fucks. Power Tab now had MIDI implementation and a full musical score above the tab itself. It now not only had the ability to play the transcribed song in MIDI, it could import MIDI files for automatic transcription, and it looks just as nice as professional transcriptions you will find in a score book. This was an instant hit and Brad Larsen (creator) told me that he was working on adding the ability to add drums for the next release (which sadly never happened). It did not take long and many popular tablature sites were now hosting Power Tab files (.ptb's) created by users in addition to ASCII tabs. Powertabs.net used to (or perhaps still does, can't see yet due to public ban) contain thousands of Power Tab files. I still have many files I downloaded from there and most of them were well done and accurate.

Now one thing I want to make very clear is that the majority of major tab sites contained tabs from every style of music. Mainstream, Independent, all the way some kid uploading his own music like myself. When the NMPA & MPA come to these major tab sites they are forced to take down everything. In case that is not clear, the NMPA and the MPA have come in and forced tablature sites to take down tabs for Independent artists. They have absolutely no right to the intellectual property of Independent artists. NONE!

But... "People can get [tab] for free on the internet, and it's hurting the songwriters," says Chief Asshole of the MPA, Lauren Keiser. And to this asshole, shutting down the website just isn't good enough. No, he also suggests we "throw in some jail time I think we'll be a little more effective."

I, personally, do not give a fuck about music that is on a major label. I listen to very little of it. I'll even grant them their right to take down tabs from major label artists for the sake of this argument... for now. If this is the case, it is no different from poisoning an entire pool to get rid of some flesh-eating piranhas with a complete lack of regard for the innocent kids that still have every right to be there.

Now with that out of the way I am going to take back my granting of their right. First off, anyone that has ever used tablature they got online knows that much of the tab out there is not quite correct. Most tabs that we used to find online were a series of notes that resembled the song we were searching for. These are generally interpretations of how another guitarist thought the song was played. Many times people get the right notes, but wrong string. For example, you can play an E on the 7th fret of the A string or you can play that same E on the 12th Fret of the low E string or the 2nd fret on the D string. There are two important distinctions between these three positions. First is due to the different densities of the strings, the tone will be different. Second, and most important, is the position your hand is in and the ease and need to get to the next note can be drastically changed by altering the position on the fretboard.

When you buy a song book, which I have and urge everyone to never buy anymore again, you notice that the transcription shows every detail of how the song was played in the recording. These include unintended flaws and techniques like slides and palm muting. Some techniques are too difficult and/or time consuming to transcribe. When this is not 100% accurate, do they still have a right to it? I'm leaning toward no.

So now I am going to go into slippery slope reasoning. Part slippery slope, part genuine concerns. What about the video tutorials on YouTube? What about cover bands? Please, go after these fucking lazy assholes! How about music teachers?

The reason some of these are not under attack by this group of assholes is that it is too time consuming because they are spread out all over the place. Tablature sites have everything in one spot. It's like blowing up buildings in Iraq trying to get Saddam and everyone else was acceptable collateral damage to these greedy pricks.

I would like to one day create a tab site with every intention of keeping it running and let it go to court so these arguments can be heard in court and hopefully well publicized. Nobody that I am aware of thus far has refused to shut their site down and be taken to court over this. I would not mind being the first.

CONvergence 2009, Yeah, I AM Going!

I went to CONvergence last year. I was not impressed. Granted, the place it is held is fucking awesome, the people are probably equally as awesome, the party rooms are fucking killer, but the panels... Holy fuck were most of the panels I went to complete horseshit.

I went to the Battlestar Galactica panel and an audience member made a comment about them finding Earth (what they thought to be Earth on S04E10). One panelist seemed very frustrated, and why, you may ask? Because the fucking guy hasn't seen any episodes past Season 3. It was a fucking spoiler for him! The fucking guy should not have been in the audience, and certainly not on the fucking panel if he was not ready to discuss the latest episodes and willing to speculate future episodes.

Another one was "Ecology of Monsters" which was boring as fuck and was apparent they had no idea what "ecology" meant. And yet another was "How To Be a Geek in the Workplace." I admit this was fascinating in some aspect, but all that occurred is the entire room, panelists and audience, bitching about how they feel discriminated against by coworkers for being a dork.

Almost every panel I went to see were just common people that should have been in the audience. No experts. These should have been just group discussions over Yahoo Chat as far as I was concerned.

I did go to both of Peter Mayhew's (Chewbacca) panels. He had some interesting stories, though he (and myself) is obviously sick of the question, "Doesn't it get hot in that costume?" One fun thing he talked about was the filming of Return Of The Jedi. During the filming in the woods in California he was told to stay on set when they were not filming. He was a bit confused why, and was then told, "This is Sasquatch country." That's fucking hilarious!

Peter Mayhew, nor any others I knew, or gave a fuck about, were showing up so I really had no intention on pre-registering for this year. The last list of guests I saw in my e-mail subscription were people I did not know. But... Then comes along this. Fucking PZ Myers is going to be there... and on FUCKING PANELS! I met PZ briefly last year at the American Atheists Conference in downtown Minneapolis. It was nothing spectacular, I just wanted to introduce myself quickly and let the man move along. It went something like this:

Drunk-ass: These are not the droids you are looking for.

PZ: These are not the droids I am looking for.

Drunk-ass: Move along.

PZ: Move along, move along.

But that is not all. We also got some Skepchicks showing up and they have some pretty good info on what to do to get them all get naked in Minnesota for you right here.

The entire Skeptic Track will be in Atrium 7, which is one of the smaller rooms, sadly. Hopefully it goes very well and it will be a recurring theme like with DragonCon in Atlanta. Then perhaps we could get more heavy-hitters of skepticism here. Phil Plait, I'm looking at you!

VenomFangX Gone Part 2

Sorry for the delay, as if anyone read the first part in the first place. I had to quit while I was ahead to chemically induce sanity after discussing this rotten little swine. Oh... and reformatting my dying computer and getting that back up and running didn't help matters. Which of course caused consumption of C₂H₆O.

As I was attempting to gather more for this entry I discovered dprjones was fucking suspended for no apparent reason again. I think I actually covered all his videos that mattered, but they are gone now. I will look for mirrors at a later point in time (I know they are out there and I have at least one video I can mirror myself) and fix the links. If anyone actually reads this and wants fixed links, let me know in the comments and I may actually get on it.

Now I admit, due to wanting to get drunk instead of finish the previous entry, I really do not have any idea what else I was going to add. However, the honorable lordhathor managed to post a very fucking interesting interview with some preacher guy of some sort a couple days ago. I am going to embed the video, but you almost certainly need to go to the original source and read the transcript by clicking "more info."

There's plenty of interesting information in this, but the one that got me was that this preacher was trying to hire VFX to become a minister and VFX declined because making more money from his donations. There is more about him not registering for tax exempt status and how he got believers at his college to pose as atheists in his street preaching videos. This is also fairly important. He claimed he was going to show his viewers how his money was being made with his street preaching videos, and the fucking fraud hired actors to pose as atheists and appear interested or converted for his street preaching videos.

Now that I am wrapping up this half-coherent (if even half) summary of VenomFangX's recent drama, I have to admit, I am completely conflicted. I am glad he is gone and I truly hope that fucker left because of legal action. Even further, I hope the fucker goes to jail for a while, at least one year. However, he is entertaining as fuck. Since he went away I do not access my YouTube subscriptions as often or fervently. His videos were so ridiculously stupid, but the best part was everyone (especially the fine folks I listed in the previous entry) refuting his ass in spectacular ways. I was really into the entire month of April, but I really wish it did not go out in a sputter. I would like to know what really happened. I do not doubt he received death threats from Muslims, but I have severe doubts the threats were mailed to his home. I highly suspect he got in trouble with more than just his parents and this was his cover.

The positive part of this is that people know his name and address. Honorable people that will not give out the information, but it is enough information to search for criminal records. In time, if my hunch is correct, this will be made very public.

I do not think VenomFangX is gone permanently. He has pulled this shit before and no one can put it past him to not pull it off again. I just think he will be gone much longer this time, either due to legal action, parental control, or tact. But mark my words, that narcissistic little fuck will be back.

Edit: Success, it worked. I wasn't sure if iBlogger required an internet connection for me to type. That's a major pain about many iPhone/iPod Touch programs. They save so much space (which is really nice) in their program, but require internet to work.

VenomFangX (VFX) is a fraud, a liar, and a plagiarist, not to mention a piece of shit. Oh yeah, he is also a fucking coward afraid of Muslims. He has left before and came back one week later.

Okay, so I've established the character of VFX... what? Oh fuck, I still have more to go. So, apparently, DMCA reports were a half-ass common thing amongst YouTube users last year when they were pissed off at someone. As it turns out, false DMCA claims are illegal. Guess which piece of shit fraud filed a false DMCA. That's right, VFX filed a false DMCA against the laudable Thunderf00t. Thunderf00t was likely VFX's biggest and best critic debunking practically everything VFX has said in his videos. VFX seemed to think since Thunderf000t was using clips of VFX's videos that he could file a DMCA against him. This failed and Thunderf00t, with some legal aid, got VFX to apologize.

Okay, I think I have enough history out of the way. Now for this retard's recent actions. April 1st VFX asked for donations because he was fired from his job. His job was working at a video store and he was fired for playing Expelled in the store, using the DVD burners to mass produce Kent Hovind DVD's, and preaching/giving these DVDs to customers. So instead of working and supporting himself, he wanted to depend on his fans for income. He then claimed in this video that he wants 500 people to donate $1 and once he received over $500 he would donate the rest of it to Sick Kid's Hospital.

After receiving over $500 in donations -- at least two donations were $500 -- he changed his mind and said that he would donate after he received 500 donations, not $500. Then the fucking asshole blames his flock for donating more than $1 and at the end he encourages higher donations. In this same video he states he needs $400 a month for his car and he now needs $900 a month. This video was made April 25th and he was approaching 500 individual donations. So what does he do? He ends the month and starts the count for May on that day.

So why the need for an extra $400 a month? Because his parents found out he was receiving donations. Since he was now making an income his father decided he can make his own car payments. DprJones released both those two videos on April 29th and April 30th, 2009. Lordhathor started his series of VFX Exposed on April 16th. This series started displaying that VFX has, in fact, had at least two PayPal accounts, though on April 25th VFX claimed that this was a lie by atheists who are out to make him go down. Lordhathor has shown that VFX's first known Paypal account was registered to "supportvfx@gmail.com" and the one we've most recently seen is registered to "support@venomfangxsite.com." Yes, it is true you can change your e-mail address for PayPal, however, as Lordhathor shows, the first, supportvfx@gmail.com, was actually shut down. Hence, he had to create a new account.

Starting Up Again

Yeah, I'm actually going to get back into blogging. I hope you 0 people that have seen this in the first place are excited. I actually abandoned this site, but am coming back to it, and likely permanently.

I originally was going to delete my first two posts and start all over, but decided to leave them for now. It half-ass displays what this will be about. The first is a movie review (in a way) and the second is commenting on a science article. The blog will be whatever I wish to speak about. Most of it will include religion, science, skepticism, and pop culture (more likely underground culture).

Comments are fully open so any asshole can be a pussy and post anonymously. I have no intention of changing this for I have no expectations that anyone will ever even see this blog. However, if, by some ridiculously fucked up circumstance, people show up and shit gets out of hand, I will change it. And I do not mean people being assholes, that's fine (and fun), but more spam and full books copied and pasted into comments.
